I finally figured out this odds thing

So, I'm watching poker on the teletubes and Mike Sexton is spouting off all this genious information about odds and winning percentages. Then it hit me. I've been thinking about this all wrong. I thought when it said 60/40, that out of 100 times, you'd win 60 and lose 40... No sireee Bob! In my world, you a 60/40 means that you run it 40 times and lose 60.

Fuck my luck.

Bowling, Poker Tournaments, and Government Cheese

I am dedicating a good portion of this weekend to playing some poker tournaments. I really want to get in some FTOPS events, so I'll probably spend a better portion of the night running some satellites trying to get into a couple of those things. I'll also be showing up to dominate the Saturday's with Dr. Pauly tourney tomorrow. I'm definitely a PLO fish, so I should fair well against you nits :)

I also have another bowling tournament tonight. It's nothing special, just a fun no-tap tournament. I finished 9 pins out of the money last week, so I'm looking to rectify that problem. I'd like to break though and snag that 300 pot as well. Nobody hit it last week, so it should be in good shape this week.

I'm kind of torn between bowling this tournament and playing poker. I really want to grind out a shit ton of hands and crawl out of the hole I put myself in a few days ago. I figure I'll just do the bowling anyway 'cause it's good to hang out with friends once in a while to be social. But I do plan on high tailing it back to the PC right afterwards to get started on my quest to become a millionaire :)

Lastly, I just wanted to send another pimp shout out to Government Cheese. This is hands down one of the greatest poker blogs of all time. It's definitely the most entertaining. You take a dude with the discipline to grind out thousands upon thousands of hands in the penny stakes and micro SnG's, add that with some actual poker talent, subtract some sanity, and finally sprinkle in some sick fascination with midgets and ninjas and you get Government Cheese. It's fuckin' brilliant and I LOL everytime I read a post.

FTOPS

Tomorrow night is dedicated to qualifying for FTOPS events. I'm gonna run quite a few satellites and try to get in cheaply.

LOL

Congrats!

I wanted to send a shout out to my main man Moose B. He shot his first 300 game Tuesday in the Mixed teams league. He just bought a brand new Ebonite Complete Envy a few days prior. Seems to be working good for him! Now do that shit on Wednesday nights when we bowl bitch!

My faith in humanity

My faith in humanity has diminished:

-Linksys/Cisco has free technical support
-Symantec has free technical support
-We charge $75/half hour for technical support (for our software!)

So, logically my day has been spent dealing with Linksys router problems and helping people upgrade the Symantec Corporate anti-virus package. This is standard with this dumbass place. I spend my days dealing with shit that doesn't concern us. The bossman is happy because we are getting paid because the customer is an idiot. The bossman is also pissed because I spent my entire day on the phone and got no programming done. I love this place.

Giving myself a chance

I was reading through some blogs today and found an interesting post by TripJax. That really hits home with me. Granted, I don't sit on the couch or lay in bed and play much poker, but I still do things that put me at a disadvantage. For instance, it seems like I'm always playing poker when I'm tired.

The largest part of my play comes directly after work, but directly before bed. The problem is that I suck at sleeping. I run worse in the bed than I do in the tables (hah! no shit)...anyway... I'm always in this insomnia induced fog. I could get more sleep if I just applied myself. But no, I'm usually up past my bedtime trying to break even on the virtual felt.

I remember back in my 2004 years when online poker was the equivalent to robbing an ATM. I slept better back then. I also stayed stoned out of my mind, so that might have had something to do with it. Creative thought and all that you know? If it works for Pauly, then why not me? In all seriousness, I don't think bong rips are the answer to my struggling poker game.

My biggest flaw is that I'm results oriented. I love to win and hate to lose. When I lose, I get upset. Admittedly, I'm a lot better at handling tilt situations now than I was 4 years ago, but I still am prone to tilt. It's not the fact that I'm losing money, but the fact that I'm losing that bothers me. Especially, when I feel like I've worked on my game so hard and I'm trying to take it to the next level. I honestly feel that I possess a train of thought on the tables that should be profitable. And for the most part it is. However, I have to get it out of my head that I'm going to win at a rate of 15 PTBB/100 in NL or 4 BB/100 in limit. It's just not going to happen post UIGEA.

Some things I've done to help give myself a chance are as follows: I have started renovating my office. I picked a nice warm color to brighten things up and help me stay alert while I'm grinding. I've also ditched my poker workbook/spreadsheet/timeclock thing I started on Jan 1. I don't need to keep reminding myself of my wins and losses on a constant basis. It just adds to my problem. The most important thing I have decided to do is keep the Pokertracker results window closed. I'm not talking about keeping it closed until the end of my session either. I'm talking the only time I'm allowed to open it is on Sundays. There used to be this brilliant piece of software back in my limit days called TiltBlocker. All it did was cover up my chips so I couldn't see if I was winning or losing. It was brilliant and it worked. I'm effectively doing the same thing by only allowing myself to check my results once a week.

I figure these few simple things can only help out. Times are tough and you need to do what you can to have an edge in the tougher games.

More of the same

Yesterday was more of the same on the poker tables. I played 1000 hands and pretty much just lost the rake. I can't make a hand anymore and when I do, I either get zero action or get rivered. Oh well, it's just a bad stretch...it'll pass.

Seriously, WTF?

I can just walk by a poker game and lose 2 buyins. How come when I run good, it's never as good as when I run bad?

More on finances

I have been on a financial downswing ever since Christmas. It seems like every time the wind blows, it's costing me money. Let's review:

  • Water heater on the brink
  • Heat pump burnt up
  • New tires
  • Brock Lesner & Tim Sylvia are pussies :)
  • Getting stacked 5 times after flopping a set

The top 3 items aren't cheap. They are just the highlights of my financial woes. It's every day something seems to be costing me money. I haven't been to the grocery store in 2 weeks because...fuck who can afford food?

In all fairness, my personal financial life is a mess. I haven't balanced a checkbook since Clinton was in office. I just wing it. I do have my onilne banking email me when my account gets so low. I have been getting more of these emails lately than ever before. It seems like I'm always shuffling money around between accounts to make it until payday. This sucks and I'm not used to it.

I have set up MS Money on my PC at home and have actually been using it for the past few days. Every purchase has gone into that piece of software and has been categorized (right down to the nicotine). I need to know where the money is going before I can figure out where to fix it. At the end of the month, I'll know exactly how much gas I bought, how much I spent on snuff, and also how much I spent dining out. I'm willing to bet that gas and dining out are my biggest expenses.

Also, it's easier to save money when you are results oriented like myself. Now that I have MS Money in front of me, I can keep a constant eye on my account balance. Maybe that will help the next time I go for that impulse purchase.

Stepping down

Stepping down in limits is almost like moving back in with your parents after a couple years of being out on your own. But sometimes it's necessary. Last night was just a horrible run of cards. I got stacked 5 times when I held a set. Twice, my oppenent rivered straights, another two times they rivered flushes, and then once my oppenent flopped quads to my boat. This was the 2nd time that same villian hit quads against me.

Couple last night's bad run with another couple hundred bucks out of the bankroll to buy a new water heater for the house and I'm going back to $25NL for a while. The bankroll isn't at critical level or anything. We'll just call it "out of my comfort zone" for $50NL.

Moving down is pretty depressing because I had such high hopes for this month. I was winning around $23/hr playing $50NL over a small sample of hands. Then Full Tilt decided to kick me in the nuts. I'm still hell bent on having an awesome month. I'm motivated to play poker (mostly because I'm chasing losses now) and I plan on playing an insane amount of hands this month. That's the plan anyway.

Tonight, I'm going straight to the grocery store after work. Then I have nothing on the agenda other than a nice steak and baked potato and some poker. Oh yeah, House is on too. But I'll poker around House.

Fuck me

I am the anti-heater. Time to retreat.

Verizon sucks

We are trying to set up a VPN connection for a customer to connect his remote branch. The customer has a frac T1 through verizon. They have a Netopia router that nobody knows anything about.

Verizon says it's not their responsibility to program the router
We don't even have access to get into the router
Netopia says Verizon is going to have to come off some info for anyone to program that router.

It amazes me how people get shit done in this world. First of all, you have an idiot customer that just writes a check blindly to Verizon or whomever sets up their network. All they know is that it works....not how it works. This seems to be a growing trend in America. Is nobody interested in how shit works anymore? They just want it to work.

Next, you have Verizon that is more than happy to take the customer's check. They are more than obliged to cash that check, but ask them for help and it's "It's not our responsibility to program routers".

Top the whole situation off with a boss that understands about 3% of the technical shit you say to him and you have a fun day. I hate my fucking job.

1.) Someone had to program that router
2.) Someone must know the password to get into it
3.) Someone should know how to set up a VPN at that location

Tracking the money

This month, I want to try something new...saving money. Or at least tracking where it all goes because I sure as hell can't figure it out. It seems like every month, I'm burning through my money with not a whole lot to show for it. It's not like before where I had something to show for it either. I used to buy shit just for the sake of buying it.... now I don't ever seem to buy any non-necessities, but I still spend all of my money anyway.

Now, I do have the house adding a burden to my checkbook, but it's just not that much. I used to pay out more back when I had 2 car payments. I never had a problem back then.

I guess the first step to solving this solution is to see where all my money is going. Then once I figure that out, I need to work on fixing that problem. I need to see where to cut back.

Now, this is all coming from someone that hasn't balanced his checkbook since high school. I am exploring some software solutions (hopefully free) that will help me track my expenses and even keep my checkbook and other accounts balanced. Once I start to see where all my money is going, then I can plug those leaks and save some money.

Super Tuesday

Tomorrow is an exciting day. It's Super Tuesday. After tomorrow, we will have a good idea of who our next president will be. Our primary isn't for quite some time, so I have to live through other states to get my political fix. This year's cast of characters? ... not so good.

I'm a registered Republican (yeah..boo! hiss!), so I'll for the most part have 3 choices this spring... Huckabee, Romney, McCain. Out of those 3, I like Huckabee the best. The main reason for Huckabee is he can rally up some support for the fair tax which I believe would help this country more than anything. McCain is more a of a middle of the road kind of guy. He just comes off as an asshole to me....much like Dick Cheney. Mitt Romney...well..I just can't vote for a guy named after a piece of baseball equipment. Besides he's a "management" type. He's a suit's suit. Not for me.

On the Democrat side, you are down to 2 choices for the most part. Clinton or Obama. Well, I despise everything about Hillary Clinton. She's a snake. I swear this woman would eat her own young to have power. The Clinton's want to be the next Kennedy's. They will stop at nothing to get there. The woman has no personality, a no good agenda, and she's just plain annoying. Obama on the other hand comes off as a cool guy to me. I don't necessarily agree with all his politics, but he knows how to speak to people. He can rally up a group like no other candidate in this race.

How I will probably vote this fall:

If Clinton vs. Romney: Romney
If Obama vs. Romney: Probably Obama
If Clinton vs. McCain: McCain
If Obama vs. McCain: Obama
If Clinton vs. Huckabee: Huckabee
If Obama vs. Huckabee: Huckabee

This is all subject to change as I learn more about the candidates and what they stand for. You just have to remember that this whole process is just a beauty pagent. The president doesn't have any real power. I'll bet that little red button isn't even hooked up to anything.

Super Bowl Blahday

The Super Bowl is kind of ghey when you don't care who wins. I was rooting for the Patriots because I would have liked to have seen the 19-0 before I die. I was also rooting for the Giants because Ahmad Bradshaw is from the next town over. I've hung out in the same places as this guy. How cool is that? Not very cool.

I'm not big on the commercials, but the lizards dancing to Thriller was pretty entertaining. I spent some of the football game channel surfing. For some damn reason I decided to cook fudge with 2 minutes left to go in the game. So I caught all of the excitement out of the corner of my eye. The fudge was excellent though.

I thought the new episode of House was sub-par at best. It was like it was rushed or something. I'm no expert, I just didn't think it lived up to House standards. I finished that episode and went to bed...fairly early for a Super Bowl Sunday I might add.

Tonight, I plan on playing some poker. I have that wave of motivation to play now. Probably because I had a losing session yesterday.

Genious

http://govt-cheese.blogspot.com/2008/01/i-have-been-trained-in-arts-of-ninja_29.html.

That is an excellent poker blog too.

Stick to NL

I need to stick to No Limit. The problem is that it's boring. I pretty much donked off some money today. I spent several hundred hands at the $25NL tables where I donked off 3 buyins. What the hell was I thinking? I have a hard time wining 80/20s. What would I think I have a chance when everything is 60/40? I also donked off 1.5 buyins at the heads up NL tables (stay away from those too!). I did get some back at the 6 max $50NL tables though.

I think I'm going to go back to 6 max for a while. It's easier to find good games at the short handed tables. Also, it's more fun than full ring which is just wearing me out lately. I think the bankroll is healthy enough now to handle some short handed swings.

Speaking of the bankroll, I am going to have to take a couple hundred out for a new water heater for my house. The one I currently have is on its last leg.

I'm about to break this blog.

Please be patient while I fuck up this blog. M'kay thanks.

Off to a bad start

I'm off to a bad start to this month. First of all, I keep forgetting to keep track of my time played, so my spreadsheet is incomplete. I can go back through my hand histories and figure that out though. Secondly the results suck. I'm down 1.5 buyins at HU $50NL, down another $94 from the UFC (bets plus buying the event), and I'm down another $20 or so playing PL Omaha.

I also played a couple tournaments yesterday. One was a 5.50 + R on Stars to satellite to the big tourney today. The other was a $10 KO tourney on Tilt. I just missed the money on that one. The funny thing is that I folded all the way to that point. Card dead is an understatement. The KO bounty was $2 for each person you knock out. I scored $0.67 when I shared a KO with 2 other guys... I run bad.

Still looking for that heater, please.

Not ready for Prime Time

Precisely the reason I don't use beta software unless absolutely necessary. Pokertracker 3 is not yet ready for prime time. While I do like the new interface and some of the new features, it's got a ways to go before being ready for release.

First of all, I couldn't convert my PT2 database. It would get all my Pokerstars hands. Then it would hang up at the same point on the Full Tilt hands every time. I let it run for hours and hours and it wouldn't finish. I didn't see anyone with similar problems online.

I decided not to even pursue trying to find the problem because the HUD is missing. I can't use my current version of PokerACE HUD with PT3, so I'm screwed there as well.

I'm going to wait for the actual release to worry about PT3 anymore.
